Sightseers beware; there is so much to take in during a visit to Cocoa Beach that the observant traveler risks being overloaded with incredible visions of space launchings, sea turtles, lovely beaches, and so much more. You’ll have so many things that you’ll want to see that it may be difficult to function, so just consider yourself warned; this is a fabulous destination jam-packed with delightful diversions.

Starting with the basics, Cocoa Beach is known for offering close contact with Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center as well as excellent views of space launches. Stand on the beach, feel the sand beneath your toes, and gaze to the North as man showcases his ability to master the intricacies of modern technology and scientific endeavors. If the goose bumps don’t rise on your skin, check your pulse.

Cocoa Beach exists on a barrier island, so it’s possible to dip your feet in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River Lagoon. Experience two different facets of wildlife that belong to these varying habitats, relishing the ever-fine weather that will accompany you on any part of the island. Yes, this area is known for amazing and trustworthy temperatures that stay pretty steady. The air and water are welcoming more often than not, so come prepared to spend a lot of time in your swimsuit.

If you’d like to venture out a little, rent a kayak and go whale, dolphin, or bird-watching. Six miles of coastline means there’s plenty of space to frolic in the sea like you’re a kid again, and plenty of sand to set up an umbrella and towel on for an afternoon spent reading a book, taking a nap, or better yet, both alternately. Normally it might be considered disagreeable to float in and out of consciousness, but here it’s the order of the day.

Energy will soon return, and when it does you’ll find many active pursuits to take advantage of. For one, a golf course that probably puts your country club to shame will greet you with open arms and keep you nice and busy for a few hours. Or, if you fancy yourself a surfer, be aware that many consider Cocoa Beach to be the surfing capital of the East Coast. Rent a board to show off your skills or feel fry to try it out for the first time. As long as you embrace the spirit of the island and go with the flow, you’ll be just fine.

A beach trolley system will take you wherever it is you want to go that’s close by, be it one of the many restaurants, souvenir shops, nightclubs, or the lighted public tennis courts. If you’re interested in taking a day trip, there are several worthwhile destinations within 60 miles or so, so hop in the car if you want to experience popular Orlando attractions like Disney, Epcot, or MGM. Port Canaveral is just minutes away, and is the place to embark for a day cruise that will satisfy your need to gamble in a casino or engage in a nighttime affair that will offer a romantic candlelight dinner.

Closer yet are a number of parks, wildlife refuges, museums, art galleries, and special events and festivals all year round. You won’t really have to leave Cocoa Beach once you arrive here, so for an intimate and truly relaxing getaway kick off your shoes as soon as you get here and don’t give them another thought until it’s time to pack up and head home.

To truly accomplish this tactic of remaining in laid-back mode for your entire trip, rent a vacation home. Cocoa Beach Vacation Rentals have a way of allowing you some peace and quiet amidst the tourist comings and goings, and will keep you as comfortable as if you were in your own home. If you’ve never gone this route before, now is the time. Get ready for a fabulous trip, and don’t forget to prep yourself for all the leisurely escapes that you can handle. It’ll be rough, but someone has to do it.

Is there any part of the planet that’s sexier than the Caribbean? Just close your eyes for a moment and allow your mind to create a soothing dreamscape… imagine long strips of virgin beach dotted with the purest white sand, water so clear you can see the bottom 50 yards from the shore, palm fronds undulating with the occasional gust of a warm mellow breeze, large tropical drinks served with multiple shots of 100-proof rum and slices of fresh mango, some old beach bum with skin scorched to crocodile toughness by a life under the sun strumming a soulful calypso tune on a cheap guitar…

Whoops. Sorry about that. I got lost for a minute inside my own dreamscape, which involved getting a twilight back rub in a swaying hammock by a nubile young… well, never mind. Where were we?

Oh yes, we were talking about the Caribbean. Did you know that there is a popular poker variation based on that magical set of planetary coordinates? Yup, and if you guessed that this game is called Caribbean Stud, you would be right.

Come to think of it, that’s what the nubile gal in my dreamscape was calling me as she rubbed cocoa butter on my shoulders. Oh hell, forget it.

Caribbean Stud is a casino table game that is quite similar in its structure to 5-Card Stud poker. Rather than testing your skills against other players at the table, in Caribbean Stud all bets are made against the house. There is no bluffing or other form of deception in this game. Also, there is only one hand allowed per player. Players cannot hold or wager on multiple hands at the table. As in most forms of poker, Players are not allowed to share information regarding their hands to other players or the dealer.

After the initial ante, each player and the dealer receive 5 cards, face down. The dealer turns over one of his cards, then pushes the cards toward the players, after which the players have the opportunity to look at the cards in their own hands.

At this point, players have the option to play or fold. If they choose to play, they place their bets (twice the original ante) in the bet box. If they choose to fold, they forfeit the ante. After all the players have made their decisions, the dealer reveals his hole cards. If the dealer ‘qualifies’ (has an Ace/King or better) he pays even money to hands that beat his. If he doesn’t have qualify then all remaining players collect even money on the ante.

There are some poker enthusiasts who dismiss this game, saying it lacks the action of other poker variations. These folks also dislike the fact that no bluffing is allowed. To each his own, but it seems to me that this outlook misses the basic allure of the Caribbean. The whole point is to chill out and enjoy yourself. Why get uptight? After all, it’s just a game. And there’s rum-drinking/bikini contest on the beach at sunset, so relax.

The list of Equatorial Guinea casinos with gaming tables for blackjack, roulette and so on is really rather short. There are none. However, there are a number of Equatorial Guinea casinos, if we want to use that term for them, which have gaming machines. There are some five of them in the country.

This shouldn’t really be all this surprising in one sense, this lack of Equatorial Guinea casinos. It’s a very small country (10,000 square miles only) with a very small population, about half a million people only. This is smaller than many counties in either the UK or the US and it is very much the smallest country on the African continent.

Another reason it shouldn’t be surprising is that the place is absolutely dirt poor, destitute in fact. Until just a few years ago the only export of any significance was cocoa and while at independence the place was rich off the back of that trade the intervening years of coups, military rulers and the general looting of the economy have taken it from one of the richest places in Africa to one of the poorest. There may be, as many have pointed out, a lot of ruin in a nation but Equatorial Guinea has shown that there isn’t an unlimited supply.

However, one event in 1996 meant that we would have expected the list of Equatorial Guinea’s casinos to lengthen: the first crude oil started to be pumped and the country is now the third largest exporter in Africa. Where there is such volumes of oil there is of course a great deal of money and you might expect some of that to be splashing around in casinos and such places. But here though, almost none of that oil wealth has made it to the people, not even to the Government itself most of the time: the dictator, Obiang, essentially treats the oil revenues and the national Treasury as his personal check book. This means that while the country is rich by the statistics, about as rich as Portugal or Spain, none of this wealth is in the pocketbooks of the people or even the public services: raw sewage runs down the main streets of the capital.

It may in fact be true that a lot of the county’s wealth does indeed pass through casinos but that is much more likely to be done in Monaco or other foreign places where the elite go to spend the money from the oil.

Across the Banana River from the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island and just north of Cocoa Beach is the city of Cape Canaveral, Florida. In the city of Cape Canaveral you will find, on a protected channel just off the Atlantic Ocean, Port Canaveral.

Port Canaveral, which not too long ago was a small cargo port is now, in addition to being a major international cargo hub, one of the, if not the, busiest cruise ports in the Western Hemisphere. It is also a fun filled recreational area.

Board a cruise ship for a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 day cruise to the Keys, the Bahamas or the Caribbean, on the 855′ Carnival Fantasy, the 952′ Carnival Glory, the 964′ Disney Magic, the 964′ Disney Wonder, the 880′ Royal Caribbean International Sovereign of the Seas, the 1020′ Royal Caribbean International Mariner of the Seas, the 916′ Royal Caribbean International Grandeur of the Seas or one of the other cruise ships that are in port. Take a 2 day gaming cruise on the Sterling Casino Lines Ambassador II with it’s 26,000 square feet of casino space, or take an afternoon, evening or full day gaming cruise on the smaller SunCruz Casinos’ SUNCRUZ XII.

Go fishing off the 1200′ Malcolm E. McLouth fishing pier, launch your own boat from the public boat launching ramps at Port’s End Park and Freddie Patrick Park or take a half, full day or night fishing excursion charter, on the Atlantic Ocean or the Indian River Lagoon, from one of the three marinas at the Port.

Go camping at the 35 acre Jetty Park with it’s 150 lighted camp sites, ranging from tents to full hookup for RVs, it’s four and one-half-acre family beach with designated areas for water-related activities, such as swimming and surfing, covered pavilions and picnic tables, restrooms with showers, refreshment stand, fishing pier and fish cleaning tables. Call (321) 783-7111 for reservations and rules.

Check out the Cove with it’s more than a dozen dining establishments, most serving fresh seafood fresh from the boats. There are also numerous shops and boutiques.

Strech out on the clean well tended sandy beach and watch the fishing boats and cruise ships go by. The sky is blue and the water is clear. Watch a rocket launch from the nearby Cape Kennedy Space Center.

Stay at one of the nearby resort hotels in Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Merritt Island and Palm Bay. Take a 45 minute drive to Orlando and visit Disney World or one of the other theme parks. Visit nearby Cape Kennedy and tour NASA’s launch headquarters, see the towering launch pads, huge rockets, history-making technology, explore the Apollo/Saturn V Center and the Vehicle Assembly Building, walk through a full-size Space Shuttle mock-up, see IMAX space films on gigantic five-story screens, and see an actual Gemini program capsule on display in Early Space Exploration. Visit one of the many other area attractions.

There is plenty for the whole family to see and do, in and around Port Canaveral.
